Iconic American illustrator Norman Rockwell regularly employed a Balopticon to project images onto canvas for tracing. He described this method self-critically: "The Balopticon is an evil, inartistic, habit-forming, lazy and vicious machine. I use one often - and though am thoroughly ashamed of it. I hide it whenever I hear people coming." Yet his distinctive style remained unmistakable, and he controlled photographic compositions. Dutch master Vermeer potentially used camera obscura techniques similarly.
